11:00 Wed 08th May 2019“Diepsloot Mountain Bike Academy is an NPO located in Diepsloot. We offer scratch coding classes to pupils of grade 8 to grade 10 as a means to introduce them to computational thinking and programming. The learners have basic maths understanding at the appropriate level, and little or no prior computer access and knowledge. We currently offer one class a month which we observe takes away the value of the lessons as there is too long a break between classes. We are looking for 3 programming students who can commit to rotating every three weeks. Volunteers need to commit to consistency, they cannot come on an adhoc basis. The classes are 3 hours on a Sunday (we can schedule them for a Saturday if that is preferred by the majority of the volunteer students.) We will sit with the students to lay out the learning objectives for duration of the programme. We’ll revise the programme on a 5 months term, starting in June 2019. The students would need to be creative self-starters who can expand on the initial learning objectives as they see fit along the way. Please note that there is no budget to pay the students for their time. The programme will strictly be on a voluntary basis. The NPO will give the volunteers a certificate of community service project work, as well as serve as reference on the CV’s where applicable for the students. Please note, as they will be working with children under 18, the students would have to get a police clearance. We look forward to hearing from you and potentially working with creative young minds from your institution. Regards Fikile Jiyane 072 765 8847 (fikile.jiyane@gmail.com)”
